We Need High Targets for GHG Reduction

As California’s regions begin to implement a new law (SB 375) that links land use planning with goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from cars and trucks, we need to be sure regional leaders understand the importance of setting goals that are both ambitious and achievable.

The regional targets for GHG reductions will be set through California’s 18 Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs).  Each MPO will be working with the California Air Resources Board to establish their targets by June 2010.  By establishing ambitious targets, the regions will encourage local communities to grow in ways that provide better transportation options, reduce lengthly commutes, and improve our air quality.  Smarter land use planning has also been proven to provide a range of economic benefits for households as well as local governments.

Help us spread the word that high targets are an essential element in re-shaping the way California grows.  Contact you regional leaders today -- click here for a list of the 18 MPO’s and contacts.  If you need help identifying the MPO that represents your community, contact us at info AT climateplanca DOT org. (please note that some rural areas are not governed by an MPO).
